YOU DON'T KNOW
UNTIL YOU
ROW
No Experience? No Problem!

Rowing is one of the very few sports that you can come to with no previous experience and excel at the college level. So few people have rowing experience when they come to college that the playing field is very level. You will not be the only person who at first doesn't know what they are doing!

Some of our athletes had not worked out in a few years, and for some this was their first experience with an organized competitive sport. Don't be intimidated by the prospect of collegiate rowing at SU. Crew, at least, has not succumbed to the commercialization to which so many collegiate and national sports have fallen. As for the workouts, expect to work hard and feel good about yourself. We will get everyone in shape and increase the intensity as we go along.

If you are curious enough in crew to be looking at this page, you should give it a try. You come with the interest and we'll take care of the rest.

Talk to one of the people at the bottom of the page for more!

Here are some frequent questions we get from people interested in rowing.

I don't want to get up early. Should I read more? YES! We have moved practice times to the evening! See below!

Who can row?frostbite folks
Any undergraduate student can compete.* If you want to work hard, have fun, and stay healthy in one of the oldest clubs at SU and the oldest intercollegiate sport in the US, join crew. *Certain NCAA-inflicted restrictions apply.

When do we practice?
Practices are now in the evening from about 6:30PM - 8:30PM, M - F, and in the later morning or early afternoon on Saturdays. Have a class at that time once or twice a week? No problem! So do we. We'll work it out.

Where do we practice?
We row out of the Pocock Rowing Center on Lake Union/Portage Bay. It's a short drive from campus, located on the South side of University Bridge. The area is one of the most diverse (rowing and otherwise) areas in the Northwest.

Who do we race?
Some of our local competition includes Western Washington University, Seattle Pacific University, University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran University, Portland State, University of Portland, Willamette University, Lewis and Clark, University of Oregon, Humboldt State University and Pacific University.

Where do we race?
We have races in the Seattle area, Oregon, California, and Canada.

When are the races?
Races are usually on Saturday mornings, with the occasional Sunday race, and we generally make it back to Seattle by Saturday afternoon. For further away races we may need to leave on Friday, but last year we managed to not miss any classes and got people back in time to work. morning

Do you have scholarships?
No. Even though the Seattle University is affiliated with NCAA Div I / II, we do not offer scholarships for rowing athletes.

What are the membership dues?
The base dues are $150 per season, and there are three seasons in the school year. This is EXTREMELY cheap compared to ANY other rowing program, be it collegiate club or a non-university affiliated rowing club. It is common for dues to reach over $500 per season for a program like ours. If you think this may be an issue, talk to the Co-Treasurers. We want you to row!

acraWhat conference(s) are we in?
As of October 5th we are members of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association, and are in conversation to possibly join the newly-formed American Collegiate Rowing Association. These are different than Seattle University's larger upcoming affiliation change - SU is moving from DII to DI, but that change does not affect SU Crew.

Do you make cuts?
No! We are a smaller school, and welcome any and all who want to participate. However, the hard work and degree of dedication expected from the student-athlete generally has the same effect.

Can I row in a single at SU?
Rowing at Seattle University is a team sport, so for races and most practices we will concentrate on boats of eight, four, and two, with and without coxswains (for the four). However, because we are all individual members of Pocock Rowing Center, individuals have access to all of the general use equipment at any time.
